FileWave & Digital Pedagogy = Key Tools for EdTech Success

A strong pedagogical foundation is essential for edtech initiatives. Learn how to set your organization’s digital transformation up for success.

The concept of digital pedagogy underscores the need to approach K-12 edtech projects with careful planning and leadership. Brian Croxall defines digital pedagogy:

“Digital pedagogy is the use of electronic elements to enhance or to change the experience of education.”

Unfortunately, 99% of school technology initiatives fail to meet certain key performance indicators. Among the top reasons edtech projects fail, a lack of pedagogical leadership and a failure to align device purchases with curriculum needs clearly outline the need to prioritize pedagogy early in the process of new educational technology programs.

The key element is that technology is being used as a force for change in teaching and learning, that using technology as a tool in the classroom is not enough to make a shift in education. Strong pedagogical leadership is the foundation of delivering a solid Return on Education (RoE) for any edtech investment, assessing the shift in education through outcomes including MAP scores, adoption rates, engagement, skill development, and broader goals including digital citizenship and equity.

School districts using FileWave to enable their digital learning environments are at an advantage: they are able to adjust quickly to shifting trends in technology platforms thanks to our multi-platform commitment and enjoy simply, automated solutions in our endpoint management suite.

Having the right tools to manage a digital learning environment is only half the battle. The rest must be baked in from your district’s initial planning phase. To set yourself up for success, consider:

  • Have a clear vision - Districts require clear vision and leadership on how teaching and learning are supposed to change, and how best to support that vision at both the IT and classroom level.
  • Get teachers on board - Teachers must first believe in the technology, and its potential to improve outcomes. Leadership is critical here. Second, they must be well-trained on how to leverage the new tools.
  • Focus on engagement - The foundation of technology is participatory teaching and learning. As Tiffany Ford notes, “digital immersion does not equal attention.” Ford’s three best practices evolve around collaboration, inclusion, and class participation, which are all expressions of engagement.

The recently published “Innovating Pedagogy Report 2019” explores how various pedagogy models are evolving with technology, including learning through play, wonder, action, making, and place. The same report looks at new pedagogy models, including virtual, drone, and robotics. Rather than taking a technology-first approach, this report focuses on the possibilities of technology to be incorporated into evolving models of teaching and learning, which is helpful when setting and communicating a clear vision for your edtech investments.

Once you’ve developed a vision, support that with the necessary infrastructure and tools to ensure your project reaches its full potential.
